Review: Palais Le Brun, Malta
Oh, Malta! The last place we visited before the coronavirus took over our world and disrupted adventure and travel. I feel so grateful to have snuck a 3 day trip to Malta in at the start of the year. Although it was winter, the sun seems to shine in Malta permanently and it was just what we needed to break up the British winter. When researching for our trip, I came across the most beautiful boutique hotel, Palais Le Brun. I knew it would be a great choice for us for our little adventure.
We wanted to prioritise this review before publishing our Malta Guide as less than a week ago, Malta opened the borders to UK travellers without quarantine after 4 months. As the first getaway after lockdown, we feel like this is a great choice. An easy, short flight from the UK to an easy to get around, easy going and easily loveable country. The keyword being easy. After all of the difficulties we’ve faced these past few months, Malta I can guarantee will be a respite from the chaos. The country itself is small and you could see it all in a week. We only had three days but we saw enough to know we’d like to go back and do the rest. Stay tuned for our Malta guide which will be out very soon but for now, swoon over our favourite hotel in Malta, Palais Le Brun.
THE HOTEL
Palais Le Brun is right in the heart of Valletta which is Malta’s tiny but wonderful capital city. You can walk the entire city. Although small, the hills are big so be prepared to walk up and down the colourful cobblestone streets. It’s quaint, beautiful and well, it’s special. Malta is unlike anywhere I’ve been before. It has a uniqueness and vibe that isn’t like any one place in Europe. The food is notably good and the people are kind, warm, helpful, and seem to be very proud to be Maltese.
Palais Le Brun is an authentic seventeenth-century baroque palace in the heart of Valletta which has been beautifully designed with views of Valletta in mind. Consisting of 28 luxury rooms, a rooftop, pool, and a fitness centre it’s the perfect blend of luxury and Maltese culture. The hotel feels like Malta, which is exactly what you want when exploring somewhere new.
The hotel is also in an unbeatable location. It’s a very short walk down to the water and a 3-minute walk to the centre of Valletta. It’s also a short stroll to the main bus stop that will get you around the whole island but most importantly the hotel is close to good coffee. Lot Sixty-one Malta. You will go there after you read our guide.
THE ROOMS
Ok, let’s talk about the Suite with the Hot Tub. The beautiful balcony, wonderful view, and hot tub are what sold me on choosing this hotel. We sat in the spa at all our times of the day looking out over the ocean and at Valletta. There are many rooms to choose from and due to a cancelled flight we were lucky enough to spend an extra night in one of their standard double rooms before our rescheduled flight and although not the suite, it was fantastic. Each room has a marble bathroom, plenty of space, TV, free wifi, air conditioning, mini bar, bathrobes, slippers, USB ports, and espresso machines. Everything you’d need.
THE FOOD
A delicious breakfast is included in the stay and is available down on the lower ground floor of the hotel. It's a great service and there’s a great selection of food to start your day. Once you’ve helped yourself to all the colder options you can also order a hot main off the menu. They even had coconut milk! Hotels with alternative milk really get 10/10 from me always.
THE ROOFTOP
The rooftop and pool is an amazing space to spend some of your precious holiday time. The panoramic views do not disappoint. Since we were there in winter, we didn’t swim but we still spent a lot of time up on the roof admiring the view and sitting by the pool. The marble stairway leading to the pool is one of my favourite things about the hotel. The marble is everywhere!
THE PEOPLE
Everyone we met was so helpful, kind, and knowledgable. They helped me work out how to get around Malta, introduced me to e-cabs instead of uber, and helped us book restaurants. They were very helpful when our flight home got cancelled and rescheduled for the following day! They were there to welcome us back with open arms. I also love whoever runs their Instagram! (hi there!)
We are longing to get back in summer to experience a different side of Malta and stay in Palais Le Brun’s sister hotel – La Falconeria which we know would be just as amazing as Palais Le Brun.
