Review: Le Riad Yasmine
Over the years I have travelled to so many different places. I have slept in many different beds. Sounds a little naughty but I think you know what I mean. I have stayed in accommodation ranging from Harry Potter themed Airbnbs (It’s worth reading our story) to luxury hotels and honestly, everything in between.
Yet after all this time and after every form of accommodation, I have never stayed anywhere like Le Riad Yasmine. Now, although Le Riad Yasmine is also Instagram famous and admittedly that’s how I found it (God bless you Instagram) it’s even more amazing than the photos could ever convey. This is because staying here is not just about the beautiful patio, amazing pool or the perfectly styled rooms. It’s about so. much. more.
What really can make or break accommodation is, of course, the people. The owners are Alice and Gabriel and surrounded by their exceptional staff they have created the most beautiful environment. Their motto is ‘May all who enter as guests, leave as friends’ and this is sincere. Do you like friends? Then it’s the place for you. It’s a place for everyone.
Even though I think you know where this review is going…let’s review.
The Riad
Do you like 5-star hotels? No me either. Joking. Now I haven’t stayed in every hotel in Marrakech but I’ve seen the £1000+ a night resorts and I’m making the call – Le Riad Yasmine is better. The pool, rooftop, people, rooms, breakfast and attention to detail is 5 star. It’s peaceful and calm, yet there’s always someone around to chat to or not chat to if you are that kind of person. It’s warm and kind, and a true respite from the medina. Oh, what a relief it is to walk through those doors after some days in the Medina. You will understand this only after you visit. Since we’re all about value. Le Riad Yasmine is worth far more than what they ask of you.
The Rooms
Since the Riad has only 8 rooms, there is a perfect balance of both privacy and feeling at home. I have stayed in the Naila Suite both times (below). The rooms are all uniquely designed with local products and vary in sizes. Prices are usually between €95 to €150 a night and you can choose to stay either at ground level where the pool is at your doorstep or the balcony level overlooking the pool. There is one room – The Agafay Terrace Suite – that has a little balcony overlooking the street outside instead of over the pool. I made a friend (as you do here) and she was staying in this room. This room is lovely and quiet even though it’s facing the street. The balcony has a little cover so it’s also private.
The Food
Breakfast
You will look forward to this from the moment you open your eyes. My first thought of the day every day is WHERE IS THE COFFEE and here there’s a never-ending pot of filter coffee. Breakfast is served on the rooftop terrace overlooking Marrakech. It’s just what you need before another day of crazy Marrakech madness. It’s moments like these that make travel so worth it - what can I say! – food does this to me. Breakfast is made up of coffee or tea, fruit, yoghurt, fresh honey, and homemade baked goods. Yes!
Lunch
Lunch is served in the dining room next to the pool. It includes a bottle of water, a main, bread and rice or couscous and it’s delicious.
Dinner
If you would like dinner at the riad that evening, you will need to book by noon to secure your meal. It’s a three-course dinner and delicious! We highly recommend eating here at least once over your trip.
The Pool
The wonderful thing about the Riad is that it’s only 8 rooms so the chances of an overcrowded pool are pretty slim. During our first visit we’d wake up for breakfast and as soon as we’re done, we’d get another mug of coffee and head to the pool…then we’d sit on that stripey bed ALL DAY. We were surprised by how many people leave after breakfast and don’t return until the late afternoon. We personally found it difficult leaving the Riad even for a few hours! Lying by the pool in the evening is also a must. Order some tea and watch the sunset from below. The colours change all around you and above you and it’s the perfect way to wind down. I miss that sight.
The people
As mentioned before Le Riad Yasmine is run and owned by Alice and Gabriel and they have certainly created something magical, a home away from home. It’s worth going on and on about them because anyone who creates something beautiful for others to enjoy should be celebrated. Outmane and Ibrahim are also WONDERFUL.
Here’s a story - I bought a Moroccan rug and a few Moroccan poufs back to the Riad and realised it did not fit in my suitcase. Standard me problem. Outmane did not hesitate in firstly stuffing my duffle bag with the poufs. Now – from my attempts, there was NO WAY they were going to fit. We all laughed as he successfully did what we could never do. He said he’s had lots of experience. It’s become clear to me over my visits to Marrakech that most people buy way more than their luggage can hold. He then also went to the post office and purchased an extra bag for me for the Moroccan rug. The extra bag was €2! He helped us save money and time and I am so grateful.
The Cats
Bowie and Bebe. I am pretty sure they love me, but probably not as much as I love them. They are another reason why I love it here – and if you ‘don’t like cats’ or are ‘allergic’ then get over it or take Claritin (I am not a doctor).
My Story
We went to Morocco for my birthday – see our 3 day Sahara adventure itinerary. I’m not sure what my experience would’ve been of this amazing country if I had not stayed at Le Riad Yasmine. With the incredible amount of places to explore in the world, it’s rare to visit somewhere twice, and although there are many places I don’t need to go to again. Le Riad Yasmine is somewhere I hope to return to over and over.
