Why You Should Visit Lago Di Braies/Pragser Wildsee
Welcome to our first ‘Before You Die’ article. You might be thinking wow, that’s a bit dark. She’s so serious. Maybe she’s too serious. Well, I wanted to just confirm that I am DEAD serious (see what I did there?). We won’t do too many ‘Before you die’ articles because when we do, we want you to know we really mean it.
Lago Di Braies is also known as Pragser Wildsee for the Austrians and it lies in the heart of the Dolomites in Northern Italy at 4908ft. I can honestly say, I have never seen anything more beautiful in my life than Lago Di Braies. It’s a hidden treasure and before the world knows more about it, we want you to go first.
You can walk or hike around the lake and even rent a row-boat to cruise (it’s harder than it looks) across the crystal clear mountain water.
No matter the time of day, or time of year you visit we can promise it will be beautiful. The ideal season is between May – September as the boat rentals are closed for the rest of the year since the lake can freeze over. In some cases of severe weather, the roads can also be closed. We recommend a half-day to full day to enjoy the entire lake. There is food available at a little kiosk by the lake which serves pretty standard Austrian cuisine and you’ll be able to park close by if you arrive early. The morning is best to avoid crowds.
We could’ve sat by this lake for the rest of our lives (dramatic I know), taking in the different colours and reflections with every corner and turn to create a different view and a new experience. I knew it would be beautiful, as I had seen all the photos – but nothing could’ve prepared me for how it would make me feel.
Anyway – enough from me. We’ll write more about Lago Di Braies and all the logistics of traveling to see it - but this is all about inspiring you to add it to your list.
I think the images speak for themselves.
We spent around 6 hours at the lake, and again a quick walk in the morning before we left. As you can see with every slight weather change, the lake looks different.
Yes I know.
