A Guide to Milos, Greece
The basics
Country: Greece
Language: Greek
Currency: Euro
Getting there: Milos does have an airport but I’ve never once found a flight...I think I’m checking at the wrong time! Your best way to Milos is by ferry either from Athens or from another island, if you’re island hopping. We recommend Ferry Hopper for your ferry tickets. Book them far in advance if you’re travelling in the summer.
Getting around: I can only recommend a car. It’s great to have the freedom to visit everything you want and need! You can hire ATVs and get taxis but ATVs will take you a lot longer than you think!
Power: Type C – Europe.
Best time to visit: May/June & September/early October but all through the summer months is good. Take note after October 31st and sometimes earlier most hotels and restaurants are closed in Milos. The season starts mid-April – May.
where to stay
We loved staying in Mandrakia. It will be where we always stay. There’s nothing there besides the sound of the ocean and of course, Medusa. We stayed in a little Airbnb which we’ve linked here. With a view of the ocean, I’d recommend booking an Airbnb around this little area for a very authentic feeling experience.
Here are some alternatives to Airbnb
Milinon suites
In Firpotamos and right on the quiet beach. only a short drive from Mandrakia. Lovely renovated rooms right on the water.
White Pebble Suites
Due to a very last-minute and super disappointing accommodation cancellation, we got an absolute miracle of scoring 2 nights at White Pebble Suites. Read our review of this fabulous hotel here.
Achinos by the sea
For an authentic fishing village experience check this place out. We’ve never stayed but we’re dedicated followers on their Instagram account and can’t wait to stay one day.
The Cove beach house
A perfect location in Kourkovouni. The cove only opened in 2021 so get in there before it’s always booked out.
Skinopi Lodge
Beautifully renovated villas up high overlooking the ocean in Skinopi.
White Coast Milos
Another new hotel on the island, which opened in 2021, is fast becoming a recommended stay.
Salt Suites
In Pollonia Salt suites sits right on the water. Some of the rooms have hot tubs! That’s enough for me.
Where to eat and Drink
Everywhere you go, try the yoghurt and honey.
Medusa
Well well well where do I begin? We have a personal connection with this amazing restaurant and its amazing owners. We help out with their social media! After meeting them on our trip in 2021, we’ve been fortunate enough to stay highly connected with these wonderful people. Medusa is a little piece of heaven on earth. Found in Mandrakia right on the water, Medusa is the restaurant of your Greek dreams. You can’t make a reservation so you’ll likely need to wait a little while for a table depending on the time you arrive but you can put your name down and go for a swim whilst you wait or return later. The views and wine are worth the time alone. Have the octopus in vinegar – it’s our favourite!
Garden the juice bar
In Adamas is this little juice bar on the side of the road so if you’re looking for a healthy breakfast bowl, smoothie, or coffee then this place is fabulous. You can’t sit in, it’s takeaway only but it’s a minute walk to the water and ferry terminal. If you’re staying in Adamas and don’t have breakfast included in your stay – this place is even better!
O! Hamos!
On the only night that we didn’t eat at Medusa, we tried O! Hamos! along the waterfront in Adamas. It’s got all the usual delicious greek dishes but the place is a real vibe. Get there early and be prepared to wait for a table. Like all the good restaurants in Milos, there are no reservations and you’ll be waiting for a little bit.
Gyros of Milos
We’re suckers for cheap Gyros in Greece. This is because it’s fresh, delicious, and affordable. Tick tick tick! The locals would tell us that this is the best gyros on the island and although I haven’t had every gyros on the island, I tend to believe them. It’s great for some lunch or more casual takeaway. Great price, great food.
Kivotos ton Gefseon
This is a very popular and cute bakery in Pollonia. The chocolate pie gets raved about and it’s worth all the raving, we ate two! It’s full of other delicious treats.
Sirocco
Utopia Cafe
The best drinking view in Plaka!
Our Favourite Beaches
Fyriplaka
We think about this place all the time. On the southern side of the island, it’s a good beach to escape the high winds coming from the north depending on the day. Sunbeds are available for hire and yes there is a bar! Parking is up on the hill and down the drive towards the beach. Depending on how busy it is you might have to walk a little way down and back up again after your day but it’s an easy access beach as long as walking is not a problem.
Tsigrado
Famously only accessible via a ladder and a hairy downward climb, it’s pretty magical once you’re down there! Although the view from above is equally as magical. Get there early as it gets busy and wear walking shoes if you’re not the best or most confident climber. Tsigrado is very close to Fyriplaka so you can visit both beaches in one day if you wanted. It’s also protected from the Northern winds.
Sarakiniko
Described as walking on the moon Sarakiniko is like walking on the moon (lol) but it’s stunning. Switch up the sand for white rocks and spend the day here. It’s a great place for sunrise and sunset if you don’t end up swimming here. Parking is easy if it’s not crazy busy. In September at all times, we visited we found a park very easily. It’s a short but clear and easy walk to the beach.
Firopotamos
The cutest fishing village with the best spots for jumping off the rocks. It’s the most picturesque location and can’t be missed!
Plathiena
Protected from the northern winds, this is a very flat and quiet beach.
Paleochori
A great restaurant and sunbeds are available here. It’s a beautiful beach and once again, shaded from the winds of the north!
What to do
Polco Sailing
Our number one recommendation is to spend a day sailing or on a catamaran with Polco sailing! You’ll swim, paddle board, eat delicious food, make some friends and see some of the most beautiful water in the world. You’ll explore parts of the island that can only be reached by boat like Kleftiko and Poliegos. There are lots of companies on the island but Polco Sailing we highly recommend.
Watch the sunset in Plaka
I saw that all the tourists seemed to flock to the top of the hill in Plaka to watch the sunset behind the church. I don’t love crowds but, it was a highlight for us. Honestly, it’s such a magical experience and the flocks of people add to this in a good way! Get there early because it does fill up and you don’t want to miss a moment of this sunset. Have dinner in Plaka after and walk around the pretty little town.
Explore Fishing Villages
Check out Mandrakia, Firopotamos, Klima, and Agios Konstantinos Syrmata, just to name a few. Great for photos and usually for a swim!
Visit Pollonia
Another beautiful little town in the north east of Milos. Lots of beautiful hotels, nice walks, nice beach and good food to explore here.
Sunset at Sarakiniko
Watch the sunset on the white rocks of Sarakiniko. We took a bottle of wine down and drank that as we watched it get dark. Epic.
Explore Papafragas cave
Check out this amazing little swimming spot en route to Pollonia from Adamas.
