3 Days in Lanzarote
Lanzarote honestly was not on our list. I can’t tell you why because I don’t even know why. I think it might be because I heard so often how it was a hub for British tourists and to me that can mean resort hotels, all-inclusive packages, and burgers on every menu, everywhere. We just aren’t that kind of traveller. How wrong I was! Yes, this side of Lanzarote does exist and it’s amazing but there’s another side to this magnificent island that is even better and deserves to be explored.
We were there over December 2020 and the sun was either shining as we drank Tinto Verano on the ocean or we were stuck in a rainstorm in the middle of a volcano crater. For me, both of those situations are ideal.
I have certainly concluded that Lanzarote is for the adventurer, the creative, and those seeking something new.
Here’s a little three-day guide to Lanzarote
to help you with your planning.
DAY ONE
First things first! Accommodation. Stay at our favourite Lanzarote hotel Palacio Ico in Teguise, one of the island's oldest towns. Enjoy the design and absolute vibe of the hotel before taking a stroll through the town and having a quick bite to eat at Cantine Teguise. All the food around this area is fabulous.
Drive to Jameos del Agua, a transformed volcanic lava tube that was designed by the island's local hero Cesar Manrique. Its tranquility makes it an amazing and interesting place to explore. There’s a small entrance fee but it’s worth it.
Continue north to Mirador del Rio, the most magnificent viewpoint that looks out over the grand volcano craters and blue water on the island of La Graciosa. It is unreal.
Before dinner visit Eguzkine ceramics. You might need to drop her a note on Instagram here to see if you can visit. You will fall in love with the uniqueness of her work and you can see right into her home studio where the magic happens! Leave some space in your luggage for some new ceramics!
To end your day, have dinner at Hespérides in Teguise. A short walk from the hotel, another delicious meal in Lanzarote. Just remember – when in Lanzarote, always have the croquettes.
DAY TWO
Wake up and have your included breakfast at Hotel Palacio Ico – it’s an absolute feast and everything is served on Eguzkine’s stunning ceramics.
Today is volcano crater day. I know what you’re thinking because it was the first thing my mum asked...but don’t worry the volcano is well and truly ‘dead’.
Drive to Volcan El Cuervo. You’ll be able to park nearby and follow the path, an easy 15-minute walk directly to the entrance of the crater. Take your time exploring. There aren’t words to describe what it’s like to stand in the middle of Lanzarote’s first formed volcano after the 1730 explosion that destroyed a lot of the island.
After your morning volcano experience head to Bodega La Geria which is a short drive from the Volcano. The locally produced white wine is a must-try and it’s something the locals are very proud of. Have some croquettes and tapas.
For the afternoon head to Playa Papagayo, a naturally white, sandy beach surrounded by calm, turquoise water. The perfect place for a swim or two if you’re wanting to spend an afternoon at the beach – this is the one! There’s quite a fun dirt road to drive along before you reach a large sandy parking lot. It’s a short walk from there. There’s a great little restaurant overlooking the beach if you are still hungry!
To end the evening, head to El Charco in Arrecife and watch the sunset over dinner. There are restaurants all along the waterfront and it’s amazing.
DAY THREE
Have your delicious breakfast at Hotel Palacio Ico before departing for Timanfaya National Park. Timanfaya is Lanzarote’s main attraction and for good reason. Arrive at Montañas del Fuego and be escorted around the park via bus (be sure to grab a seat on the right). You can also book a walking tour via this website here that gives you quite a different experience from the bus. You can book different walking routes that all vary in time. After winding or walking through a sea of endless volcanoes, drive along the west coast making stops at Los Heriverdos and Playa de Montana Bermeja before arriving at your final stop, El Golfo. This is where you’ll see the green lagoon, black beaches, red earth, and blue water. This was easily my favourite place in Lanzarote.
Have dinner along the waterfront during golden hour at one of the many restaurants. The sunsets here are magical.
You can easily spend more than 3 days in Lanzarote but it’s a great weekender from the UK if you’re looking for a little bit of sun in the winter time.
